Background Reading

Federalist #1
Federalist #10
Federalist #51

These three papers contain, arguably, the three most compelling arguments in favor of the merit of the Constitution. I want you read each and consider how each incorporates an understanding of human nature into the document's design. More specific questions will follow.

For my lecture students: You will be given an out of class assignment to bring in with you early the week of September 8th. The assignment is simple: Outline each of the papers--just the Federalists Papers. We will skip the Anti-Federalists. There will also be a small 10 question multiple choice test on the subject matter of the papers. The outlines and the multiple choice tests will each be worth 50 points.

For My internet students: Read the three Federalist Papers assigned in your syllabus. You'll note that page on the wiki also contains the Anti-Federalist response (you are not responsible for reading them--but ought to anyway). Outline each of these and point out the way that each takes human nature into consideration in the design of the republic. Email me 500 words on this subject by Monday September 8th.
